Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola meet after 16 years for new film

Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray are going to work together again. The independent studio A24 announced Tuesday that Sofia Coppola’s film “On The Rocks” would be her first project under an agreement with Apple, which is embarking on the production of original content. The film, which takes place in New York City, stars Rashida Jones as a young mother returning to a larger-than-life father, played by Bill Murray.

Lost in Translation had helped Sofia Coppola win the Oscar for Best Screenplay and received many other nominations. Bill Murray was also nominated in the Best Actor category. The Coppola-Murray duo also collaborated on the special program “A Very Murray Christmas” recorded for the Netflix platform in 2015.

Coppola had previously teamed up with A24 for the crime thriller “The Bling Ring.” A24 has also produced very well received films such as “Ex Machina” in the past.

A24 had announced a few months ago that they have a new partnership with Apple and the indie filmmaker and distributor will produce several full-length films in collaboration with the tech giant. The complete details of the Apple-A24 partnership are not yet available to the public. It is, however, unknown if the film made by Sofia Coppola will receive a theatrical release or only be meant for Apple’s forthcoming streaming platform. The latest film will be Coppola’s sixth feature film in the footsteps of previous releases “The Virgin Suicides,” “Lost in Translation,” “Marie Antoinette,” “The Bling Ring,” and “The Beguiled.”  At 2017 Cannes Film Festival she had won the Best Director award with “The Beguiled.”

The filming of On the Rocks, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is scheduled to begin this spring in New York. Apple and A24 signed a multi-year partnership agreement last November. The duo has not yet announced a release date for “On The Rocks.”
