Star Wars New Game Cancelled Due to Timing Issues

Star Wars

EA canceled an upcoming Star Wars open world game that had been announced at the time it shut its Visceral Games studio way back in 2017. A report from Kotaku suggested that it was being developed at EA Vancouver. The Star Wars game had been codenamed “Orca” and was in the stages of early development. Players would take up the role of a scoundrel (similar to the canceled Amy Hennig Star Wars game) or a bounty hunter who would work with multiple factions in the series’ universe. Orca’s cancellation seems to be the result of poor planning with respect to EA’s road map for the next few years.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier wrote– “After EA’s top decision-makers looked at their road map for the next few years, they came to the decision that they needed something earlier than the planned release date for Orca, according to two people familiar with what happened. So they had to cancel the Orca favor of a smaller-scale Star Wars project which will aim for a much sooner, likely, late 2020 release, which will happen to be the time around which the next-gen consoles will also launch. (Might be a bit earlier; might be a bit later. From what I have heard, next-gen plans are definitely still in flux.)

Schreier’s track record is great, and it unearths details regarding games such as Fallout 76 being a survival game even before Bethesda announced the same as well as reporting on the Assassin’s Creed titles way before Ubisoft officially revealed them. This is pretty accurate.

This doesn’t mean that the Star Wars fans will be left out in the cold. EA currently has a Star Wars game on the way for 2019, but this isn’t another Star Wars Battlefront title.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order will be the next Star Wars game from EA, and it is closer than what users think. The Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order release date and story details have been leaked on Reddit. The game will be out in November and it will take place five years after the Revenge of the Sith which ties into something familiar. The Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order’s events have been set between Episodes III and IV. Its protagonist is Cal, who is a Palawan who survived Order 66. His mentor is a woman by the name Ceres. In addition to this, Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order might also come with the Ninth Sister and/or Night Sisters though, by the Redditor’s own admission, they could not remember exact details.

The user attended a Disney-hosted Star Wars marketing presentation and posted details regarding Star Wars Episode IX and The Mandalorian. These were independently verified by Star Wars leaks and news site MakingStarWars, and these websites have a solid track record. They suggested that the information regarding Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order might as well be accurate.

At EA Play, which is EA’s pre-E3 2018 event, studio boss Vince Zampella said that it will be available in the holiday season of 2019. In addition to this, he also said that the game will take place between Star Wars Episodes III and IV which is a time when the Jedi were hunted down. In the past, Respawn also announced that the game would be in third-person and was being helmed by God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen.

That said, it will be interesting to see how monetization will work for  Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order in the wake of Star Wars Battlefront 2’s various issues. Provided how well Respawn’s last game, Titanfall 2 also managed micro-transactions, it is safe to say that it will be a cosmetic-only affair.
